SUMMARY:FOSDEM 2026
DESCRIPTION:FOSDEM is a two-day event organized by volunteers to promote the widespread use of free and open source software. \nIn 2026\, Rust Foundation Software Developer Adam Harvey will be presenting two talks: \n“A Phishy Case Study” — “In September 2024\, the good name of crates.io was invoked and besmirched by a phishing attack that targeted the owners of many popular crates\, much as other language ecosystems had been the target of attacks in the preceding couple of weeks. This talk will go over how this all went down\, what we did\, and how a worldwide Rust Project <-> Rust Foundation <-> Alpha-Omega collaboration was crucial in its rapid mitigation.” \n  \n“Using Capslock Analysis to Develop seccomp Filters For Rust (and Other) Services” — “The Capslock project was started within Google to provide a capability analysis toolkit for Go packages\, and has since been open sourced and is being extended to support other languages. \nIn this talk\, we’ll walk through using the experimental cargo-capslock tool developed through a grant from Alpha-Omega to analyze the capabilities of Rust services. We’ll then use the result of that analysis to create seccomp profiles that can be applied using container orchestration systems (such as Kubernetes) to restrict services and ensure that updates are unable to silently open new attack vectors\, and discuss how this technique can be applied to services written in other languages as well.” \nIf you are attending FOSDEM\, we encourage you to check out Adam’s sessions!

SUMMARY:Talent Arena (MWC Barcelona 2026)
DESCRIPTION:The Rust Foundation will participate in Talent Arena at MWC Barcelona with programming that spans strategic infrastructure leadership and hands-on engineering. \nOn the XPro Stage\, Executive Director & CEO Dr. Rebecca Rumbul will present “Building the Future in Rust\,” examining why Rust is evolving from a developer preference into a strategic infrastructure choice across safety-critical systems\, AI infrastructure\, telecom platforms\, aerospace\, automotive\, and embedded environments. The session addresses resilience\, security\, performance\, and long-term technology investment in global digital infrastructure. \nThe Foundation will also host a series of in-depth technical workshops led by Lawrence Freeman\, Founder of Fledgio and a Rust Foundation Silver Member. These sessions include advanced async and trait patterns in production systems\, building intelligent agents using Rust and open-source tooling\, and a hands-on exploration of AI quantization\, numeric precision\, and inference performance. \nThese workshops mark the launch of Rust Foundation x Credly Workshop Completion Badges\, providing participants with publicly verifiable recognition for demonstrated Rust expertise. \nJoin us in Barcelona to explore where Rust fits in the next generation of digital infrastructure.

SUMMARY:Open Source SecurityCon EU 2026
DESCRIPTION:Open Source SecurityCon is a new event that fosters collaboration and shares innovation in cloud native security and open source software security. Sessions will cover architecture and policy\, secure software development\, supply chain security\, identity and access\, and open source public policy. The 1-day event will gather a diverse community of professionals to include software developers\, security engineers\, public sector experts\, CISOs\, CIOs\, and tech pioneers to address challenges and opportunities in modern security. It is hosted by CNCF and OpenSSF and is co-located with KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe. \n  \nThe Rust Foundation’s Director of Outreach\, Lori Lorusso\, will be presenting the following lightning talk at the event: \n\n“A Case Study in Cross-Ecosystem Security Response”\n“Companies use multiple open source projects and programming languages in their product stack creating a potential ‘wheel of misfortune’ when thinking about the rise in software supply chain attacks. Taking it one step further malicious actors are targeting programming languages to get to the core of how products are built. The rise in attacks at the programming language level seen as recently as September 2025 has amplified the need for cross communication between language ecosystems. Using the phishing attacks on Rust and Python as a case study we will show how Alpha-Omega facilitated stronger links between ecosystems\, specifically the Rust Foundation and Python Software Foundation (grantees of Alpha-Omega) and how this helped improve security response times and outcomes when the phishing attacks were launched.”
